Happenings at the Farm Jan 2020

Happenings at the Farm

A new decade is upon us at the Farm, as 2020 has rolled in.  We are very excited about the upcoming growing season that is just around the corner.  The last few seasons have been very challenging with the record amounts of moisture that mother nature handed us.  We look forward to the upcoming season with new and old challenges that may arise.  We are constantly planing how to make your experience at the Farm even better than your last visit.  Every year we make some changes, some are small and some years the changes might be very drastic in the eyes of some.  Yet they are all done in a manner to improve how we operate, but more importantly to improve your time here on the Farm  whether you are picking berries or walking through the Corn Maze during Farmtoberfest.

We are busy getting all our seed and plant orders in and paid for.  Planning and organizing where we are going to plant everything as it changes year to year with all our rotations.  Going through a lot of the equipment and getting them all ready for the busy season.  Some work happens in the Hoop House, as we start planting in March and are currently growing spinach and lettuce.

Spring will soon be upon us and of course strawberry picking.  Really!  Winter is a time for us to regenerate our energy for the upcoming seasons, but also to reflect on our blessings and why we are so grateful.

We hope you and your family will venture to the Farm this spring, summer & fall and enjoy what we have to offer. What a great way to get in touch with your food and who is growing it. There’s nothing like spending a little time in the country and breath some fresh country air.

The anticipation of that first Sweet Juicy Fresh Strawberry is hard to take, but we all must be patient, as soon everyone will be enjoying them. Pick Your Own Strawberries at Porter’s Patch is very popular among friends and families, however we do pick them for you too if you can’t afford the time to pick them yourself or physically can’t do it. We will be happy to pick you some yummy berries for you and your family.

Like our Facebook page and keep up to date on behind the scenes – what we do at the Farm on a daily basis.

Once the Strawberry Picking season starts we try to be open every day from 8am to 5pm. Times and days are subject to change due to weather, picking conditions and availability of strawberries in the fields.

Honeoye is our earliest ripening berry, they are very plentiful, but can be on the smaller size. Jewel is a berry that ripens a little later than a Honeoye and tends to be bigger, just not as plentiful. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that you can pick a certain variety when you arrive at the Farm due to a lot of variables that affects our picking schedule. Keep in mind that both berries are berry sweet!

You have two options when you arrive to pick your own strawberries. Pick a pail of strawberries for $11, a great option if you just want a few fresh sweet berries. Pick a flat for $25, this is your best value at the Farm. We do allow you to heap both of the containers. This price also includes the cost of your container. A pail will hold about 5 to 6 # heaping and a flat will hold about 14 to 16 # heaping. Keep in mind the size and water content in the berries does vary the weight of the berries in your container.

We also will have a large selection of Pre-Picked Strawberries available daily. Keep in mind, we only take orders one day in advance, as many variables effect our picking schedule. We do recommend placing an order, especially if you are not picking up till the afternoon hours. We sell by the Quart for $5.50 or a full flat for $44.

Other item available at the Farm Store during Strawberry season:

Peas, Asparagus, Lettuce, Green Beans, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Pectin (sure jell), Hullers, Beverages, Hats, Tee’s, and Hoodies.

Strawberry Picking near Appleton Wisconsin April 2018

Strawberry Picking near Appleton Wisconsin.

Hello Friends of the Farm!  Well everyone, it looks to be a late spring, what a snowstorm this was, historical. Our best indications from the total snowfall is to be over 30” of snow with some drifts as high as 15′ to 20′. We just need to wait and see how long it takes all of it to melt. Strawberry picking at the Farm probably won’t be until the later part of June, unless of course we get some extreme hot weather. Just a patient waiting game we guess for Strawberry Picking near Appleton Wisconsin.

Our Fresh Tender Asparagus Countdown is well under way, only 9 days left?? We hope to have yummy Asparagus available the beginning of May at the Farm Store. Organic Lettuce will also be available that is grown in our high tunnel. We all just need to be a bit patient yet. Soon the Farm will be free of snow and come alive, the frost will be out, and planting season will finally be here. Better late than never, Right! I’m sure everyone is suffering from cabin fever and just wanting winter to end.
